Three Strikes And Youre Out Law Essay Example For Students

Three Strikes And Youre Out Law Essay Three Strikes Youre Out Law Essay composed by: cv5199 We have all known about the most current enemy of wrongdoing law, the Three strikesand youre out law. It wasnt simple getting this law from the bill stagein Sacramento to the law stage, since it's anything but a criminal friendlylaw. Implying that this laws intention is to bring torment, enduring, andintimidation to crooks. Our state government was fundamentally ran bythe Assembly Speaker Willie Brown, presently civic chairman of San Francisco. Earthy colored had the ability to pick who sat on what advisory group in thehouse, and utilizing this he could end any bill he didn't agreewith. What's more, with this mentality it took a great deal of patients and perseveranceby the individuals attempting to pass this bill. Be that as it may, how did the bill become abill? I will respond to this inquiry with assistance of the Kimber Reynoldsstory. Monday, June 29, 1992 in Fresno, California a young lady wasbrutally killed outside The Daily Planet, a café belittled bythe neighborhood youngsters. The young lady was visiting home for the summerafter being in the Los Angeles zone going to class. Her and a friendwere getting into their vehicle when two folks on a bike rode upnext to Kimber Reynolds hindering her in, taking her satchel, and beatingher into accommodation. The story made the 11 oclock news just minutesafter her dad had hit the sack. At the point when police ran a foundation checkon the two speculated men, Joeseph Micheal Davis and DouglasWalker, the two men had as of late been discharged on parole with multipleoffenses on their records. Shockingly Davis was never brought inbecause when police were endeavoring to capture him he started firing, wounding clueless cops and at last being slaughtered. Douglas Walker was sentenced for accomplice to kill. Mike Reynolds, Kimbers father, went on the radio on a neighborhood radioshow called the Ray Appleton Show, KMJ 580. There he would discusshis shock about how he was tired of recurrent guilty parties being bolted uponly to be discharged after a small amount of the sentence was finished. Heswore to the individuals listening that he would do somethingabout the issue, regardless of whether it takes him for eternity. Tuning in to that showwas Fresno Assemblyman Bill Jones (R). He was keen on theissue and masterminded a gathering with Mike. They talked about thoughts abouthow they could take care of this issue. Considering that Mike utilized a few associations and accumulated onesuperior, one re-appraising, and one city court judge, just as awell-known nearby barrier lawyer, a delegate from the FresnoPolice Department, a specialist in adolescent equity and Ray Appleton. The men did some examination and drew up certain thoughts. Their finallegislative proposition was as per the following: Double the sentence for a conviction of any crime if there is a previousserious or vicious lawful offense conviction. Triple the sentence or a quarter century to life, whichever is more prominent, forany blend of two earlier rough or genuine crime convictionscoupled with any new lawful offense. Probation, a suspended sentence, or a promise to a diversionprogram as a substitute for spending time in jail in jail is restricted for felonswith in any event one earlier conviction of a genuine or rough lawful offense. Any criminal with at any rate one earlier genuine or vicious lawful offense convictionmust carry out any resulting lawful offense punishment in a state jail (as restricted toa area prison). Terms are to be served sequentially, as opposed to simultaneously. Most extreme suitable downtime for good conduct is diminished to 20 percent. Earlier lawful offense feelings can't be usedas part of a supplication deal. Since Mike had the proposition he had Bill Jones submit it to the statelegislature. Immediately the bill was sent to the Assembly Public Safetycommittee to be affirmed. This board of trustees is known as an executioner oftough-on-wrongdoing bills, and comprised of eight individuals, Paula Boland,Richard Rainey, Tom Umberg, Tom Bates, Joh n Burton, Barbara Lee, andcommittee administrator Robert Epple. Both Boland and Rainey wereRepublicans while the rest were Democrats, and one empty seat due tounknown reasons. This board of trustees was moderate or even moderatelyconservative, but since Willie Brown had the ability to choosemembers of the advisory group he picked those individuals whom he thought wouldsway the vote towards a liberal bearing, which didn't reflect thephilosophy of the entire gathering. Mike likewise had asked FresnoAssemblyman Jim Costa (D) to be a co-creator of their proposition, Mikewanted a bipartisan way to deal with the governing body. Which means he needed tohave both significant gatherings spoke to in the proposition. The men had two Republican and two Democratic votes in support of them andonly required one more vote to pass, yet lamentably they didn't get thatone vote since Brown set up the board of trustees and didnt need atough-on-wrongdoing bill. Berkeley Assemblyman John Burton gave Jones anoption to re-compose their proposition the manner in which he sees fit, or have the proposaltaken from the floor again and put to another vote. The issue with thelatter was that in the event that it flopped again there could never be another next time. Jones and Mike Reynolds did neither one nor the other, their main goal presently was totake it directly to the individuals of the state and discover what they think. The two men did precisely that, paying for exposure out of their ownpockets. In the long run they got corporate help from organizationslike the NRA (National Rifle Association) and the CCPOA (CaliforniaCorrectional Peace Officers Association), just as others. Their effortswould not be unproductive in light of the fact that they realized that on the off chance that they could get enoughsignatures that the proposition would be put on the November, 1994 electionballot. The men had countless marks that lead to theinduction of the proposition to the voting form as Prop 184. The men made a fewminor changes to the proposition however at long last it fundamentally read as in the past. The men realized they needed to keep it straightforward on the grounds that they knew individuals wouldnot vote in favor of something they couldn't comprehend. There is a ton of discussion about genuine and rough lawful offenses in the law andthere are sure offenses that must be met so as to qualify as a seriousor fierce lawful offense. The lawful offenses that would fall under both categorieswould be those that are past wrongdoings and additionally convey an extensivesentence. With the entry of Three strikes some contended that it would light anincrease in savagery against law authorization officials, putting them indanger as they attempted to keep up open wellbeing. The American CivilLiberties Union contended that crooks confronting a lifelong incarceration in the event that they were tobe sentenced would be unmistakably bound to oppose capture, ambush officials andkill witnesses. Since the establishment of the law viciousness against lawenforcement officials has not risen however fallen. In the three years before thelaw attack against law implementers dropped 14.9% while since theenactment it has dropped 11.9%, setting a descending pattern. A few investigations have contended that the number of inhabitants in detainment facilities and correctional facilities will risesubstantially in view of the expanded jail sentences, impediments on theability of recurrent wrongdoers to acquire credits to lessen time, and prisonersrequired to be condemned to jail inste ad of correctional facilities. Regardless of forecasts tothe opposite, the development in the jail populace since the sanctioning hasslowed. In the four years preceding the law the jail populace increasedby 37%. disinterprerto!

disinterprerto! I will admit: Ive been in a bit of a rut. Dont get me wrong. Life as an AeroAstro is amazing in a lot of respects. 9AM classes for Unified Engineering mean my afternoons are very free. Since Im also living at East Campus now, and not Next House, Im spending a lot more time on my hall and making new friends with hallmates. I no longer tool alone (like I did for most of last year) and I feel like Ive found an amazing group of friends who understand me. Im continuing on with the Design/Build/Fly team, training all our delightful new members and gearing up to fly (and win!) in Tucson next April. And late last week, the entire AeroAstro department canceled classes on Thursday and Friday for the AeroAstro Centennial Symposium, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the MIT AeroAstro department. I got to meet astronauts, hear Elon Musk speak live, and get expert perspectives firsthand from industry and academic professionals about the future of commercial aviation, spaceflight, autonomy in aerospace, and aerospace education. There was a moment which stuck in my mind. I was fortunately well-positioned to get a picture. Thats Michael Collins, speaking from the audience during the Q/A session of the astronaut panel on Friday morning. Picture the scene: 11-odd current and past astronauts, men (and one woman) who fixed the Hubble or deployed Chandra or lived on the International Space Station, sitting on stage. Theyd spent the past hour reminiscing about MIT, sitting across from each other in Unified Engineering or working in each others labs or writing their theses. Here was this elite group of people, modern heroes of engineering, and a crowd of aerospace students looking up to them from the audience. Then Michael Collins stands up, the so-called third astronaut of Apollo 11. As xkcd puts it, the loneliest human: Here was this man, the first man to orbit the moon, a man whos been the farthest away from Earth humanity has ever been, and he stands up from the audience to say a few words applauding the teamwork, spirit, and inspiration of the astronauts on stage. I dont remember exactly what he said (there will be videos online later), but I remember how it made me feel. It was a feeling of witnessing something of great import, a convergence of everything that astronautics represents and strives for. Engineers, astronauts, scientists of the present, past, and futureall in one room, all full of overflowing respect and humble awe for each other. Over the weekend, however, I got a little stuckfor a variety of reasons. I was feeling unmotivated with schoolwork, frustrated with how I was handling Unified, and generally a little worn around the edges. So I gave myself a break. I submitted a job application, and then I wrote a play for my playwriting class about five people who get trapped in an elevator. I cleaned my room, wiped down the floors, laid down a rug, and took a nap. While I napped, I dreamed that I was Harry Potter, in the labyrinth at the end of Goblet of Fire. I came across a monsterone of those zombies from Half-Liferaised my wand in defenseand got stuck. Fortunately, Ron Weasley was by my side, and he told me something that spurred me into action. I found the spell disinterprerto! coming out of my mouth, and zapped the zombie, which promptly morphed intoGollum. Huh. Again, said Ron. So I did it again, and Gollum turned into a human in a skin-colored morphsuit. One more timeand it disappeared. And I woke up. It struck me that my dream represented a good approach to MIT. When youre stuck, there are friends there to help you deal with your problems. And when there are problems you dont know how to deal with, you can break them down into simpler and less threatening-looking problems, until before you know it, its gone and youre moving forward through the maze. Youre not really sure where youre going, but youre moving forwardand youre with friends. So here I am, recharged with inspiration, still feeling a little worn, but moving forward. The semester is, unbelievably, half-over, zooming by in a way that it didnt seem to do last year. But Im moving forward. And Im with friends.

The Concept Of Human Genetic Engineering Essay Example For Students

The Concept Of Human Genetic Engineering Essay â€Å"How does my Christian Faith Contend with Genetic engineering?†Religion-what does that mean to me? Do I believe in my religion, what has religion done for me lately? I would have to say religion has brought me hope for a better life and knowing that I can bring a better life to my family. I believe in God, I believe that god created humans and created the earth the water the moon and stars, and all creatures that exist on earth. What have I given back to religion? Generation after generation the emphasis on worshipping God in church has been on the decline in my family. My faith has not declined I just believe that God is everywhere and I feel that I can worship Him anywhere and at anytime. Does my faith in Him come into question when I look into the advancement of technology in science? Science of genetic engineering can sometimes heal and cure the ill. Genetic engineering can reproduce foods and recreate species of any kind. Makes me wonder if my faith can handle the co ncept that mankind can alter what God has created, and whether or not I want to be apart of a world that is not original but fake. I will contend with these two subjects and try to find if I want to belong to a society that is engineering a new world. We will write a custom essay on The Concept Of Human Genetic Engineering specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now Genetic engineering of any organisms, is it possible? The scientists have genetically engineered some of the following:The superpig engineered with human growth hormone gene †¦The supersalmon engineered with grow-faster genes from another fish†¦Clones of Dolly the Sheep ‘the big success story’†¦A soybean with a Brazil nut gene†¦ It is possible to clone or reproduce organism, but what about the sick or the people dying from deceases can genetic engineering help those in need. If so, what price tag do you put on a medicine that can save lives? Who will control the special tool for sustain life? Will it be the wealthiest society or can it be available for the normal human being? When we heal the sick what is it we are risking in return? Keith Parkins states:Genetic engineering may lead to a worsening in the rise of decease. In transferring a gene from one species to another we may also be transferring disease vulnerability, antibiotic resistance, cancer and a host of problems we may not yet be aware of. Three decades ago Legionnaire’s disease was unknown, two decades ago AIDS was unknown, one decade ago Mad Cow disease was unknown. So I am left to wonder where do the new diseases and cures for the diseases come to a rest? Will new and more violent diseases appear after we find cures and treatments for the disease we have now. What does my religious background think about genetic engineering?God is the creator of man, which was what I was taught and what I believe. Why do scientists want to re-create and prolong life? God will find other means to take life when the time comes for someone or something to pass away. I believe God wanted humans to advance their selves by faith, not to cheat life or to find shortcuts to sustaining life, genetic engineering for example. Ted Perry says, †Ã¢â‚¬ ¦man did not weave the web of life; he is merely a strand in it. Whatever he does to the web, he does to himself.†What does this phrase mean to myself, well man created cloning techniques and the consequences for humankind are coming from God. In Genesis, of the Old Testament, chapter one,God tells us that He personally created all the various kinds of organisms individually and said that they were to reproduce according to their kind. When he saw that each kind was reproducing according to their own kind, he said that it was good. The way I understood God was reproduction with your own kind is good and reproducing an identical of your own kind was wrong. God states, † You shall keep my statutes. You shall not crossbreed two sorts of animals. You shall not sow your field with two sorts of seed.†This tells me God knew one-day humans would try to breed new life and God will not allow such a thing to happen. God commandments suggest if we disobey them we shall reap God’s curse,But it shall come to pass, if you do not obey the voice of Jehovah your God, to observe carefully all His commandment s and His statutes which I command you today, that these curses will come upon you and overtake you:Cursed shall you be in the city, and cursed shall you be in the country. .u5ead31ac64e883600715a770cb039074 , .u5ead31ac64e883600715a770cb039074 .postImageUrl , .u5ead31ac64e883600715a770cb039074 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u5ead31ac64e883600715a770cb039074 , .u5ead31ac64e883600715a770cb039074:hover , .u5ead31ac64e883600715a770cb039074:visited , .u5ead31ac64e883600715a770cb039074:active { border:0!important; } .u5ead31ac64e883600715a770cb039074 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u5ead31ac64e883600715a770cb039074 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u5ead31ac64e883600715a770cb039074:active , .u5ead31ac64e883600715a770cb039074:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u5ead31ac64e883600715a770cb039074 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u5ead31ac64e883600715a770cb039074 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u5ead31ac64e883600715a770cb039074 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u5ead31ac64e883600715a770cb039074 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u5ead31ac64e883600715a770cb039074:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u5ead31ac64e883600715a770cb039074 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u5ead31ac64e883600715a770cb039074 .u5ead31ac64e883600715a770cb039074-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u5ead31ac64e883600715a770cb039074:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: As I Lay Dying: Styles Used By William Faulkner EssayCursed shall your basket and your kneading bowl. After-School Care Essays - Mathematics Education,

After-School Care Posner and Vandell's article, "Low-Income Children's After-School Care: Are There Beneficial Effects of After-School Programs" provides valuable research to support the need for quality after-school programs for low-income children. Low-income children need after-school programs like UCLinks because "poverty affects children directly because it limits the material resources available to them and indirectly because of the psychological distress it engenders in parents, which in turn negatively influences parental behavior."(1) The time a child spends after-school is also important to their academic and social development. The quality and type of after-school care a child receives directly correlates to their performance in school and growth in academic abilities. The UCLinks program was created to offer low-income children a quality, academic after-school program. In the UCLinks program, they have children develop their academic skills in language arts, reading comprehension, off-computer activities, and mathematics. The UCLinks after-school program works on bringing the children up to grade level or furthering their development. It does not serve as a homework center for children. Instead, the UCLinks program concentrates on fostering their academic talent in an organized environment. In Posner and Vandell's article, they document research that promotes organized, academic after-school care, "Children's academic and conduct grades were positively related to time spent in one-to-one academic work, with an adult, whereas academic and conduct grades were negatively correlated with the amount of time spent in outdoor unorganized activities." (454) The children of the UCLinks program work with a mentor in 1-1 or 1-2 setting, where mentors specifically focus on academic areas they need to improve or help them develop their abilities to the fullest. 1B. The UCLinks program understands how important reading skills are to children's success in school. If children do not learn to read at grade level, they have a greater risk of falling behind in class work and eventually dropping out. The UCLinks program uses a combined approach to reading instruction with whole language and specific skills development. In each mentoring session of the UCLinks program, the mentors practice whole language instruction. Children have the opportunity to read one on one with their mentor. Bill Honig advocates this interaction with the children, "Teachers classroom routine should include reading good literature to students and discussing it with them, especially by asking questions that stretch children's minds beyond the literal meaning of the text."(3) The active participation the children engage in while reading to their mentors is productive because the children are able to practice decoding, automatic recognition of words, and improve their reading comprehension. Mentors ask their students relevant questions about the book that pertain to the plot, main points and theme of the story. The UCLinks program also practices the specific skills development with their students. Specific skills development focuses on phonemic awareness, phonics, print awareness, word structure, and word-attack and self-monitoring skills. Honig recommends specific skills development, "Students should be taught these skills in an active, problem-solving manner that offers plenty of opportunities to practice the skills in actual reading and writing situations."(13) Children work on computer software like Kid Phonics to develop these specific skills which will ultimately help them read better. The children of the UCLinks program can also spend off-computer time writing stories and poems which immerses them in print awareness and word structure. 1C. In "Children, Mathematics, and Computers" by D. H Clements, he writes "It appears the dominant focus of school mathematics instruction in the last decade has been on computational skills(which students are learning fairly well), but that the development of problem-solving skills and conceptual understanding has been inadequate."(1) The focus on computational skills rather than the problem-solving and conceptual understanding hinder the mathematical abilities of students. As math becomes more abstract, they do not have the required mind state to solve problems with higher level concepts. The UCLinks program supports the teaching of relational mathematics, according to Skewer, knowing what to do and why, over rote learning with their students. The solid mental foundation relational mathematics builds will increase the mathematical abilities of the children and help them problem-solve as math becomes more complex and abstract. The teaching of relational mathematics in the UCLinks program can be observed with the use of pencil and paper, manipulatives, and computers to help children understand mathematical concepts and problem-solving. These practices are further supported in Clements article, "National Council of Teachers in Mathematics recommends that students be actively involved in learning, experimenting with, exploring, and communicating about mathematics."(4) The development of children's mathematical abilities increases when they actually learn the concepts behind the math problems and how to solve them on their own. The interaction children have with pencil and

Cures and Strategies for Senioritis

Cures and Strategies for Senioritis You may have first experienced senioritis that strange funk and apathy you feel your senior year, where all you can think about is getting out of school in high school. Senioritis in college, however, can be just as bad, if not worse. And the consequences can be more permanent and severe. Fortunately, there are several ways you can conquer your senioritis and turn your senior year of college into one of great fun and great memories. Take a Class Just for Fun Your first year or two, you were probably taking your prereqs. Then you focused on taking classes in your major. If you have the time in your schedule, try taking a class just for fun. It can be on a topic you always wanted to learn more about (Modernist Poetry?) or something you think will help you in your post-college life (Marketing 101?). Just go for a class that appeals to you because its interesting, not because of what it can add to your already rigorous courseload. Let your mind enjoy the class for what it is, not because you have to be there. Take a Class Pass/Fail This option is often underused by many college students. If you take a class pass/fail, you can relax a bit on your grade. You can focus on other things and reduce a little bit of stress on yourself. Talk to your professor, your advisor, and/or the registrar about what your options are. Do Something in the Arts Did you always want to learn how to paint? Play the flute? Learn modern dance? Let yourself splurge a little and indulge in a desire youve kept hidden until now. After all, after you graduate, taking fun classes like these is going to be much more difficult. Letting yourself do something just for fun, and because it fulfills a creative desire, can be incredibly rewarding and a great cure for the boredom and routine that might be coming from your other classes. Do Something Off Campus Chances are youve been in a little bubble on your campus for several years. Look past the campus walls and see how you can help the surrounding community a little. Can you volunteer in a womens shelter? Help at a homeless organization? Pass out food to the hungry on Sundays? Giving back to the community can really help you gain your perspective, will help improve the community around you, and can re-energize your mind and heart. Additionally, getting off campus at least once a week can do your body good. Challenge Yourself to Try Something New Every Week Chances are, youre feeling apathetic and suffering from senioritis because your life is very routine. Fortunately, youre on a campus where new and exciting things are happening all the time. Challenge yourself and some friends, if you can to try something new every week on campus. Go to a cultural dinner for a kind of food youve never tried before. Go listen to a speaker talking about a topic you could learn a little more about. Attend a film screening for a movie you might have otherwise passed on. Make a New College Memory Every Week Look back at your time in college. Sure, the things youve learned and your in-class education has been important. But just as important can be the memories youve made with other people along the way. Aim to pack as many as you can into your senior year. Try new things, grab some friends, and see what memories you can make with each other. Take a Mini-vacations with Your Friends or Romantic Partner Youre in college now and practically (if not actually) an independent adult. You can rent a hotel room, travel on your own, and go where you want to go  when you want to go there. So book a mini-vacation with some friends or with your romantic partner. It doesnt have to be far, but it should be fun. Escape for the weekend and let yourself enjoy life away from school for a few days. Even if youre tight on money, there are tons of student travel discounts you can use along the way. Do Something Physically Active Feeling apathetic can manifest itself physically. Challenge yourself to do something physical, like take an exercise class at the campus gym or join an intramural sports team. Youll improve your physical health, be able to work your stress out and increase your energy. (Not to mention, of course, that youll tone up and feel more confident!) Mentor a First-year Student It can be easy, during your senior year, to forget all that youve learned and what it was like as a new student on campus. Additionally, it can be easy to forget how fortunate you are to make it through not everyone who starts their first year makes it all the way through to their senior year. Consider mentoring a first-year student in an on-campus mentoring program. Youll regain some perspective, realize how well-off you have it, and help someone else out along the way. Start a Freelance Business Online The news is full of tiny start-ups that start in college residence halls everywhere. Consider what skills you have, what youre good at, and what you like to do. Setting up a website that advertises your services is easy and doesnt cost much money. Youll gain energy as you focus on a new project, maybe earn some extra cash, and get some experience (if not clientele) that you can use after you graduate.

Various Key Competencies of The Crocs Inc Shoe Company Case Study

Various Key Competencies of The Crocs Inc Shoe Company - Case Study Example Crocs Inc can employ this strategy through making shoes from foam clogs (a croslite material) manufactured by a Canadian company (Snyder, 2011). This material is a mixture of inexpensive ingredients from many suppliers. This material is very easy to wash with water and it does not slip on wet boat decks. It prevents bad odor because of the presence of large ventilation holes. The foam is closely celled in shape of the wearer’s foot to provide maximum comfort. These new designs of shoes may be sold to sailors from a leased warehouse. They can also have a brand name â€Å"clogs†, which can capture the attention of many sailors. Synder (2011) postulates that the company may also hire experienced consultants in combination with their own representatives and distributors who will be experienced in sales and marketing to manage its sales and control costs. A supply chain that provides a competitive advantage can also be developed by Crocs Inc managers. Through this supply chain, retailers can place bulk orders to be supplied during the selling season. These orders can be quickly manufactured and shipped to new retail stores. This will no doubt offer a competitive advantage over other manufacturers. Crocs Inc may also expand through acquiring ideas from executives, Flextronics, and built infrastructure. The shoe company can also launch their sales worldwide to increase profits. It can also be helpful in getting a brand name that would stand out in the competing market in Europe (Snyder, 2011). Funky looking shoes would then be introduced in the market. The company should buy most of the competitors’ stakes so as to take control of the market. The company should also consider increasing more shoe companies. This can be done by opening more branches in different territories around the world. These new companies will add more ideas to the business and increase the rate of growth.

Genetic Cloning Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Genetic Cloning - Essay Example Human cloning is a controversial that elicits diverse reactions from all quarters and almost every member of the human race. The issue of cloning has caused much debate since the firs cloning of a live sheep in Scotland in 1997 (Allison, 2009). This is concerning ethics and authority to participate in the events leading to the creation of a new human being from the originally born one. This topic is crucial to the existence of human beings as it may be used to either improve their lives or degrade them. Genetic cloning takes place using embryonic stem cells, which is a concept that became known in the late 1990s with the isolation of the initial human embryo stem cell. This isolation works because embryonic stem cells can differentiate and form any human cell ranging from blood cells to skin cells, and it is from this that the idea to create perfect human beings first came into play. This is especially with potential use of stem cells to crate different organs and ensure that humans no longer suffer from conditions that can be healed through genetic cloning. The most popular means of cloning research done in the world today and from the 1970s is that of recombinant DNA technology, which entails replacement of molecular DNA fragments with those that are favourable to the host. This in human cloning is generating concerns in creation of super humans in that they select the best traits needed in humans and use recombinant DNA technology to fix these genes in host DNA (Bliss, 2012). The main way in which this technology has been used is through In-vitro fertilization that was discovered in the late 1970s, this has been used to date to eliminate undesirable traits in children and allow parents and scientists to pick out the traits, and conditions they would like to have their children. This is especially helpful I eliminating genetic conditions that parents may have in that the embryo is microscopically examined for signs of genetic disorders such as Tay - Sachs dis ease and Sickle Cell anaemia. Besides this, the creation of designer babies can be done after the child is already born, which is similar to vehicle maintenance through application of cannibalized parts from other vehicles. Children born with defects that were not detected during the genetic engineering process can undergo maintenance from selected genes from other children and genetically cloned parts. Genes, in this case refer to molecular units in a cell containing genetic information of heredity (Kaplan & Rdgers, 2003). This can be evidently seen in the case of Charlie Whitaker from the UK who was born with Diamond Blackfan anaemia, which prevented him from making his own red blood cells (Mclean, 2006). From this, genetic cloning allowed a designer baby to be made by correcting his situation at a young age by transplanting cells from his younger brother’s umbilical cord. This is indicative of some of the latest developments in human cloning to create designer babies throu gh curative measures. The key idea in designer babies is anchored around four key concepts and these are prevention of genetic diseases, promotion of conception of healthy children, correction of defects before a womb rejects an embryo and elimination of potential organ transplants. Another type of cloning is somatic cells nuclear transfer, which involves transfer of the nucleus of a

Educational Quotes Applied to Music Education Essay

Have you ever had a moment where you found yourself struggling to understand a difficult concept on your own when all of the sudden, â€Å"click,† and it all made sense? You could consider this to be like a light bulb turning on inside your head, and now the understanding is all clear. Now imagine a kind person giving you a source of light to make everything clear, rather than you trying to formulate a light bulb all by yourself. This is exactly how educators work and is what this wonderful quote is trying to address. By consuming their own knowledge and experience, they ignite a light that shines for their students to use to guide them to their future success. Before explaining its relevance to the music educational world, I will first clarify the symbolic use of the candle. As educators, we grow in our knowledge and mastery of the art in which we choose to pursue. By attaining more wisdom and skill, the foundations we build will carry over to our workplace and allow us to succeed to higher degrees. This can be closely related to the build of a candle. The stronger and better the wax or oil is made, the more brilliant the candle will illuminate when ignited. A stronger light means for a better view. Others may use this strong light to guide them through many dark challenges that face them. Although the candle cannot be used as a tool for direct protection, it offers a brighter understanding of what the individual may face, and from there they can make the correct judgment. Teachers serve as this candle, while students serve as the lost individual. If a teacher has a strong foundation in what they know, their wisdom can be passed on to their student so that they may make their way successfully to their future. Although the educator cannot be there to sit in the student’s chair and take the exam for them, they may deepen the student’s understanding of the concept and allow for them to make the right choices based upon their understanding. The candle does not walk for the holder, but it will light the way so they know where to walk and what to avoid. The wonderful thing about candles is that their light does not diminish at all until all the wax or oiled is consumed. Educator will always have lessons to teach their student until all of their wisdom is consumed by the student. The only thing that can extinguish its flame otherwise is the carelessness of the holder allowing it to defuse. Music educators do not stray much at all to academic educators when it comes to comparing their impact upon students. The more knowledge and skill a music educator has will impact how bright their student’s future will be and how well they will master the art of their instrument. This is why it is important for music teachers to receive great education in all elements of music education. Then maybe one day, the student may grow up to become a well-made candle for another ambitious student to light the way to their future.

Nazi-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact Essay

Without the Nazi-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact there would have been no war in Europe. To what extent is this statement accurate? Within Europe leading up to World War II, the Nazis and Soviets made the Nazi-Soviet Non-Aggression pacts which negligible of the pact it seems inevitable that the war would have existed as there were many other major factors that provoked the war in Europe. These factors include the unresolved issues of World War One, with the Treaty of Versailles being the main one, Hitler’s actions, one of these being the invasion of Poland, the failure of appeasement and the failure of the League of Nations. With these major factors the Nazi-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact was only a minor factor in the war in Europe and so without it the war would have still broke out. On August 23, 1939, enemies Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union signed the Nazi-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact, in which the two countries agreed to, take no military action against each other for the next 10 years. By signing this pact, Germany had protected itself from having to fight a two-front war and the Soviet Union was awarded land, including parts of Poland and the Blatic States. Soviet leader Stalin viewed the pact as a way to keep his nation on peaceful terms with Germany, while giving him time to build up the Soviet military, while Hitler used the pact to make sure Germany was able to invade Poland unopposed. Historian Ian Kershaw notes in â€Å"Hitler: 1936–1945: Nemesis,† the German chancellor was ecstatic. He congratulated his foreign minister and said the pact â€Å"will hit like a bombshell.† Hitler had planned on invading Poland from the start as it would bring lebensraum for the German people. According to Hitler’s plan, the â€Å"racially superior† Germans would colonise territory. German expansion had begun with the annexation of Austria in 1938 and continued in 1939 with the occupation of the Sudetenland and then all of Czechoslovakia. Both had been accomplished avoiding conflict On 22 June, 1941, just two years after the pact was signed, the pact was broken when Germany invaded the Soviet Union. Therefore, the Nazi-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact did play a role in provoking the war in Europe although was only a minor factor in the cause of the war. The Treaty of Versailles was the Peace Settlement between the Allies and Germany at the end of the First World War. This treaty held Germans solemnly  responsible for WWI and the German authorities had little choice but to accept the terms of the Treaty presented by ‘the Big Three’. The Versailles treaty placed a number of restrictions on Germany and put them in financial ruin and put them in a state of hyper-inflation. Germany was forced to pay reparations of a futile amount; they lost 10% of their land with a new map of Europe carved out of Germany and the German military reduced drastically, including the abolishment of its air force. The treaty of Versailles caused a depression throughout Germany which helped Hitler rise to power as he used the treaty as a way of justifying his expansionist policies. The Treaty of Versailles contributed greatly to the alienation many Germans felt about their civilian, democratic government, and when these combined with the actions of the military, it provided a rich material for Hitler to use to gain the support of those on the right. People were dissatisfied with the government and voted to power a man who promised to rip up the Treaty of Versailles. Therefore, due to the harshness of the treaty of Versailles it was inevitable that a war would break out.

Shawn Hornbeck Kidnapping

It was a shocking discovery that prompted an emotional response from even the veteran police officers who made it. Looking for a boy who had been kidnapped four days earlier, they found another boy who had been missing for four years. But the miraculous recovery of the missing teen immediately raised as many questions as it answered. On January 12, 2007, the investigation into the disappearance of a 13-year-old Missouri boy  who was last seen four days before getting off the school bus, resulted in the discovery of Shawn Hornbeck, 15, in an apartment near St. Louis. Police serving an arrest warrant in an apartment complex for another person  spotted a white pickup truck that matched the description of one being sought in the disappearance of Ben Ownby, who was last seen near his home in Beaufort, Missouri, about 60 miles southwest of St. Louis. Why Didnt He Escape? When police served a search warrant on the apartment of Michael Devlin, listed as the owner of the pickup truck, they found Ben Ownby along with Hornbeck, who disappeared in October 2002 while riding his bike in Richwoods, Missouri, about 50 miles southwest of St. Louis. Immediately questions were raised as to how Devlin was able to hold Shawn Hornbeck in an apartment for four years without him being able to get away, although he had several opportunities to escape. Neighbors reported seeing young Hornbeck hanging around outside of his apartment complex, unsupervised. He would also ride along the neighborhood streets on his skateboard or bike, alone or with a friend from the complex. When he was nearing the age to get a drivers license, neighbors saw Devlin giving him driving lessons. Most assumed that they were father and son. Hornbeck also had contact with the police four times during his captivity. One time he spoke to the police after he and his girlfriend discovered that his bike had been stolen while parked outside of a shopping mall.   He also had access to a computer and posted on the website dedicated to Hornbeck that his parents put up. He asked in his post how long they would keep looking for their son and he signed it with the name Shawn Devlin. Why didnt he run away? Why didnt he reach out for help? Deal With the Devil When Michael Devlin pleaded guilty in four different courtrooms to charges related to kidnapping and assaulting the two boys, the answers to those questions were revealed. Shortly after Devlin kidnapped Hornbeck, back in 2002, he planned to kill the boy after repeatedly sexually assaulting him. He took Shawn back to Washington County in his pickup truck, he pulled him from the truck and began to strangle him. I attempted to kill (Shawn) and he talked me out of it, Devlin said. He stopped choking the boy and sexually assaulted him again. In what prosecutors called a deal with the devil, Shawn told Devlin at that time that he would do whatever Devlin wanted him to do to stay alive. We know now the details that made him not run away, said Shawns stepfather, Craig Akers. Over the years, Devlin used many methods to control Shawn. The details of the abuse Shawn endured are so horrific and graphic that it was not released by most media outlets, although the reports were readily available. Devlin admitted to making pornographic photographs and videotapes of Shawn and taking him across state lines to engage in sex acts. To continue to control Shawn, Devlin took him with him when he abducted Ben Ownby in January 2007, telling Shawn that because he was in the truck he was an accomplice to the crime. Shawn Protected Ben Ownby Authorities said Shawn was a hero, who tried to protect Ben Ownby from the torture that he had to endure. Devlin told Shawn that he planned to kill Ownby after keeping him a short time. I think that Shawn Hornbeck is really a hero, Ethan Corlija, one of Devlins attorneys, told reporters. He really threw himself on the sword many times so Ben would not have to go through any undue torture. Devlin entered guilty pleas to dozens of charges in four different courts. At last count, he received 74 life sentences to run consecutively, which will keep him in prison the rest of his life. Were just so glad this is the outcome, that the monster is caged and will remain caged, said Craig Akers.
